On Sunday the Washington State ferry system switched to its summer schedule, adding extra sailings on popular routes. A third vessel will now operate on the Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth route throughout the day, whereas last year it ran only at midday on weekends due to crew shortages. The Port Townsend-Keystone route gained two daily sailings through Oct. 12, and the Anacortes–San Juan Islands schedule was adjusted to improve on-time performance. The full schedule is available on the transportation department’s website.
The start of the summer schedule coincides with the World Cup taking place in Seattle, where tournament visitors will be heavy users of public transit. To handle increased ridership, the state transportation agency is keeping 20 of 21 ferries ready, plus reserve vessels for rapid response to any issues. Additional crews and staff will be on duty at terminals to help passengers navigate on busy days.
