The Latakia derby between Hittin and Tishreen was played in the Syrian football league on Friday. Hittin took all three points, beating their traditional rivals 1–0 in a tense, noisy encounter. A video circulating on social media showed Syrian security personnel carrying unconscious fans from the stands and handing them over to ambulance crews.
The match had to be stopped for about five minutes in the second half as thick smoke filled the stands after fans set off fireworks and flares en masse. The incident added to the drama of an already heated derby, but Hittin managed to hold on to their narrow lead and celebrate an important win over Tishreen.
